Subject: 11.11.1918

The anniversary of this great day which closed the
glorious chapter of the WWI and put the cornerstone
of the still more glorious WWII, passed unnoticed
in our lists. Glancing through French press from
that time I found at the last page, among the news
in brief, a short notice of a fait divers which
I report in Appendix.

APPENDIX

Paris, a hospital.
Down in the street furious crowd roars:
'Mort à Guillaume!, Death to William!'
At the first floor a patient in agony.
His delirious spirit sees the crowd break into
the hospital, seize and kill him. And in last
spasms of terror he dies, lynched in his soul.
For, while his name is William,
Guillaume Apollinaire to be precise, he ignores that
it's November 9 1918, that Germany is about to
capitulate and that it's another William, Wilhelm von
Hohenzollern, the defeated Emperor, whom the crowd is
claiming.
