January 2007 Update from T H A T A W A Y. O R G - Home of the National
Coalition for Dialogue & Deliberation
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Hi, everyone! I hope you've all recovered from the holidays.

In addition to sending you headlines from the News & Perspectives blog at
Thataway.org so you're up-to-date on what's happening in this
rapidly-growing field, I wanted to bring your attention to two amazing
upcoming events that NCDD is co-sponsoring. I also want to share with all
of you some footage from our highly successful 2006 National Conference on
Dialogue & Deliberation.

Here are the details...

1. Footage from NCDD's 2006 Conference in San Francisco

I encourage all of you to take a minute to check out one or both of these
clips. The first, at
http://wms3.streamhoster.com/faq/clients/ncdd/ncddpromo.wmv, is a wonderful
5-minute piece that gives you a feel for what an NCDD conference is like,
and the fabulous people who attend our events.

The second, at
http://wms3.streamhoster.com/faq/clients/ncdd/ncddreflective.wmv, is a
longer piece that allows you to experience the popular Reflective Panel at
the conference. Panelists in 2006 were Chris Gates, E.D. of Philanthropy
for Active Civic Engagement, Leanne Nurse of the Environmental Protection
Agency, scholar John Gastil of the University of Washington, and Juanita
Brown, Founder of the World Café.

Let me know what you think! And contact me if you'd like to be connected to
FAQ Productions so you can have this kind of thing done at your own events.

2. Nexus for Change - March 22-23

Held at Bowling Green State University in Ohio in March, Nexus for Change
promises to be an unprecedented conference bringing together practitioners,
researchers, leaders, activists, and educators to advance participative
change methods.

The focus of the gathering will be on leveraging the power of over 60
approaches being used to transform whole organizations and communities as
they tackle 21st century challenges - the 60+ methods featured in the
just-published second edition of The Change Handbook. These approaches are
broadly referred to as large-group methods/interventions, whole system
change, or large-scale change. What makes them unique are two foundation
assumptions: high involvement and a systemic approach to improvement.

At this conference, we will be working side-by-side to:

- Address critical needs at local and global levels,
- Expand the reach of the methods around the world,
- Design significant field research projects,
- Invent new tools, techniques, and applications,
- Incorporate technology to leverage existing methods,
- Connect with others to form joint ventures,
- Innovate educational programs and courses,
- Craft a common language, and
- Articulate a platform for this body of work.

The NEXUS is an opportunity for us to transcend our individual contributions
and achieve something bigger than we ever thought possible. Register today
and be part of shaping the future with...

Billie Alban, Emily & Dick Axelrod, Jean Bartunek, Peter Block, Juanita
Brown, Barbara Bunker, Tom Devane, Susan Dupre, Merrelyn Emery, David
Gershon, Peggy Holman, Cheryl Honey, David Isaacs, Jake Jacobs, Jim Rough,
Sylvia James, Sandra Janoff, Stewart Levine, Harrison Owen, Gabriel Shirley,
Nancy White, Marvin Weisbord, Diana Whitney, and many many more (including
me!).

Go to www.nexusforchange.org to learn more or to register.

3. Facing Violence: Justice, Religion and Conflict Resolution - February
1-3

The RockRose Institute's 2007 World Forum on "Facing Violence: Justice,
Religion and Conflict Resolution" will take place next month at the Argent
Hotel in San Francisco, California. It looks to be a VERY exciting program,
with speakers such as former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and
Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Elie Wiesel, and group dialogue facilitated by
Mark Gerzon, the Public Conversations Project, Search for Common Ground, The
World Café and others.

The program offers a dynamic, interactive experience for all participants,
focusing on the question "How do we prepare people and societies to resolve
conflicts and co-exist peacefully?"

Registration is $795, but there is a discount rate of $495 for full-time
employees of non-profit organizations, youth 18-25-years old, educators,
leaders of religious congregations, artists, government employees, community
mediators, public interest lawyers, writers and Barristers Club members.

Call 888-544-2695 to register or visit www.rockroseinstitute.org. And let me
know if you're going; I want to hear all about it and can't make it myself!

NCDD brings together and supports people, organizations, and resources in
ways that expand the power of discussion to benefit society. Dialogue and
deliberation help people bridge gaps, make better decisions, take collective
action, and become more active citizens. Dialogues are powerful personal
experiences that often lead to careful deliberation and collaborative action
or policy recommendations.
