In an ideal society, 35 hours should be more than enough for everybody to earn
enough for living. With all the progress in technology, it should be possible
even now. For DD to work, people will have to have more free time to be able to
participate in decision making.

However, the society being what it is, French 35H raised
costs over competitivity threshhold, drew a lot of
entreprises out of business or to outsourcing, thus
ruining the already rotten economy and exploding exclusion
to european record.

Hi All,
let me explain what's happening in Italy. It's probably the same problem
for France, Germany, USA etc....
In Italy there are 2,5 Ml of families under the threshold of poverty,
while other 2,4 Ml are just above it.
The buying power has dropped to -19,8 for the white collar workers and
-16,1 for the other workers during the last few years (2001-2004).
The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) keeps
suggesting the Italian govt to improve the liberalization of the market
(thus privatization of the public services like hospitals,
transportations etc... and less incomes for workers) which simply means
less social benefits for the citizens.
Ok, let's see how the other side looks like.
During 2004 the Italian stock exchange had had some + 147%. The
dividends went to the holding companies, mainly.
Insurance companies had profits of2,59 Bl in 2003 and over 5,0Bl in 2004.
Eni (oil company) + 26 % ( 42Bl profit)
Enel (energy) + 31,5 % (26Bl)
Telecom (telephone) + 8,2 % (23Bl)
Banca Intesa + 29 %
BNL (bank) + 34,2 %
etc....
During the first 4 months of 2004 were sold: 1.700 Porsche,190 Maserati,
186 Ferrari, 4.371 Mercedes e 4.749 Bmw (over 50k Euro). Second and
third luxury homes in places like Portofino, Capri, Cortina e Courmayer
had a increase of +17,6% during 2003. Luxury boats (above 24 mt) had a
+154% in the last 5 years while small boats had a +35%.

I'm not an economist nor a mathematician, but it seems to me that the
numbers suggest that there has been a wide (world wide, i'd say)
operation that has moved the money from the pockets of the common people
to the cash of the petrochemical, insurance companies and banks. While
common citizens are getting poorer, very few are getting wealthier.
Now: who or what's "ruining the already rotten economy"?

Best regards

Giorgio
