Subject: Re: [WDDM] Truer Democracy

Greetings,

I unsubscribed from the WDDM list on February 2 because my own views
on democracy seemed to be at odds with most of the people on this
list. It was with considerable surprise that I learned, on May 18,
that I had been elected to the WDDM Board -- and got the most votes!

So I rejoined the list, and began following the discussion again. I
am mystified as to why people voted for me, because once again I see
that the views expressed here are very different from my own
understanding of democracy. Indeed, there are whole chapters in my
book devoted to explaining why voting and elections always lead to
rule by elite cliques. Clearly every so-called democracy today is
ruled by elite cliques (Bush, Blair, Merkel, etc.), and has been ever
since they were established as 'democracies'. The arguments in my
book refer to this historical fact, but my main arguments are from a
systems perspective: elections divide people into factions (for and
against issues or candidates), and divisiveness can be easily
exploited by manipulative power seekers. Such people have always done
so, and they always will.

Real democracy is not about 'making decisions', but rather about
people working together to solve their problems and develop their
collective agendas. It is about dialog and listening, not about
debates and voting. I'm working with people and organizations all
over the world who are seeking to realize this vision of democracy.
The WDDM community has quite different ideas, and I respect that. My
presence on the list and on the Board can only stifle your progress.
I think you're pursuing the wrong objectives, but I have no desire to
inhibit you from doing so.

For these reasons I must respectfully decline to accept my position
on the Board. Besides, I'm launching into a new major project, aimed
at promoting a dialog vision of democracy, and I won't be able to
devote the time required to participate in WDDM administration.

If anyone reading this is interested in my ideas about democracy, and
my activities in that regard, you might join my discussion forum by
sending a message to <cyberjournal-subscribe(at)yahoogroups.com>. The
archives of our discussion are at:

best regards to all,
